Several Czech law firms have made something of a breakthrough onto a prestigious list for the profession. Brzobohatý Brož & Honsa made The Chambers Global 2004 list of top law firms list for the first time, tying with Baker & McKenzie for the top spot in the new category of dispute resolution – litigation and arbitration – and landing third in banking and finance, just behind Czech firm Procházka Randl Kubr. Klein Šubrt Došková and Brož & Sokol & Novák also made the grade in this category.
In the Czech Republic, U.S. and U.K. firms nabbed the top spots again this year in most categories, but several smaller firms with local names made an appearance for the first time.
Published out of the U.K. by Chambers and Partners Publishing, Global 2004 ranks lawyers by skill and reputation. Global 2004 and other lists, such as Legal 500 and Global Counsel, are becoming more important here. Although some question certain discrepancies in the rankings, being on the list, most agree, is a stamp of credibility and a good way to get the firm’s name out to a global audience.
“If you’re dropped from the list it’s bad news,” said Karel Muzikář, managing partner at Weil Gotshal & Manges. He considers Chambers the only objective evaluation of the market because it looks at large and visible transactions. “The list shows how you stack up against the competition,” he said.
Law firms in the Czech Republic were rated in five areas of practice, including banking and finance; communications; corporate law/mergers and acquisitions; real estate; and a new category, dispute resolution. In interviews by Chambers researchers, clients were asked to report on technical legal abilities, professional conduct, client service, commercial awareness and other qualities.
The usual suspects dominated the top positions in both banking and finance and corporate law this year: Weil Gotshal, Allen & Overy and White & Case. In the communications category, ranking firms serving telecommunications and IT clients, Kines Böhmová & Schollaert grabbed first place.
