Uganda’s presidential election and the issue of debt relief have featured prominently in African newspapers this week. In Uganda itself, the state owned New Vision had little time for complaints by the main defeated candidate that Yoweri Museveni’s re-election with some 70% of the vote was rigged. Its editorial called on Dr Kizza Besigye to put up or shut up. “Most Ugandans accept that Museveni won it fair and square,” it declared. “Besigye needs to come up with more than mere allegations. He needs to provide comprehensive, detailed and accurate examples to substantiate his case.” Hollow victory? In Kenya though, the announcement of Mr Museveni’s victory prompted contrasting reactions. The East African Standard, while regretting threats made during the campaign, welcomed the result. “The issue is whether or not the outcome of the poll reflects the general will of the people of Uganda,” it said.
