JAKARTA: The government will wait for a ruling from the Malang District Court in East Java on graft suspect Syamsul Bahri before making a decision on his status as an elected member of the General Elections Commission (KPU). State Secretary Hatta Radjasa said Sunday if Syamsul was convicted by the court, the House of Representatives should begin looking for a replacement for Syamsul. “But if the court rules that he is innocent, the government will install him as a KPU member,” he said. Syamsul’s inauguration as a member of the poll body has been postponed due to the corruption case against him. Prosecutors have demanded the court sentence Syamsul to two years in prison, fine him Rp 50 million (US$5,435) and order him to repay the state Rp 489.3 million. The charges stem from a sugar factory project the defendant was involved with as head of the Community Dedication Institute at Brawijaya University. — JP |
