A debt relief conference, organised by the Tamilaga Vivasayeegal Sangam, would be conducted at Sivagiri village in the district on December 29. The Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Women Empowerment, Subbulakshmi Jagadeesan, the Union Minister of State for Industries and Commerce, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, S.K. Karvendan, MP, and farmers’ association representatives would be participating. The conference committee in-charge, K.P. Sengodu and E.R. Kumarasamy, said that the conference would demand the State Government to waive all the agricultural loans, interest and penal interest arrears for farmers, as Erode district was the worst drought-hit district. The farming community has been affected by the drought and even the recent rain has not helped them. Most of the farmers are not in a position to repay their loan dues and were economically affected. The conference would also demand the release of water for irrigation of dry crops from January 15 from the Lower Bhavani Project reservoir into the LBP canal. The conference would register its protest against the textile dyeing and leather tanning industries, which are now discharging their untreated effluents into the River Cauvery and also in Kalingarayan canal. |
