Oct. 28–With vandals trying to disrupt the Internet and probing the weaknesses of America’s corporate data networks, White House Cyber Security chief Richard Clarke has his work cut out for him. Clarke, a Dorchester native and MIT graduate, came to Boston recently to make the case for President Bush’s plan to secure cyberspace. He spoke to Globe technology reporter Hiawatha Bray during a visit to the newspaper. QUESTION: What is the White House message to Americans about computer security? ANSWER: It is that everybody relies on cyberspace. Everybody has to act to secure that bit of cyberspace on which they depend… The vulnerability we are able to identify already will take years to fix. And it really doesn’t matter, at the end of the day, whether it’s Al Qaeda or Iraq or a hacker club or a criminal cartel who comes after your enterprise, or for that matter comes after us… |
